Background of the Study
The Background of the Study sets the scene. It tells the reader why this problem exists, what is already known, and what gap your project will close. A strong background reads as a funnel - global to local to organisation to gap.
The Background Funnel
Figure 3.1 - The four shrinking bands of a strong background section.
What Each Band Contains
| Band | Length | Citations Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Global / industry context | 1 paragraph | 2-3 recent international refs |
| Philippine / local context | 1-2 paragraphs | 2-3 PH refs (PSA, BSP, DICT) |
| Beneficiary / locale | 1-2 paragraphs | Primary source (interview or survey) |
| The gap | 1 paragraph | Synthesis - state what is missing |
Mistakes To Avoid
| Mistake | Better Move |
|---|---|
| Starting with a dictionary definition | Start with a statistic |
| Quoting only foreign sources | Mix global and PH evidence |
| Hiding the gap | Say plainly what is missing |
| Naming your system in the background | Save it for the Statement of the Problem |
