1.4 TOGAF Framework
TOGAF is The Open Group Architecture Framework. Its core is the Architecture Development Method (ADM) - an iterative eight-phase cycle from preliminary work to architecture change management.
1.4 The TOGAF Framework
What TOGAF is
The Open Group Architecture Framework - a widely adopted EA method. It pairs a vocabulary (the Architecture Content Framework) with a process (the Architecture Development Method).
The ADM cycle
ADM phases at a glance
| Phase | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Prelim | Establish architecture capability + principles |
| A | Architecture Vision (charter, scope, stakeholders) |
| B | Business Architecture (baseline + target) |
| C | Information Systems Architecture (data + application) |
| D | Technology Architecture (networks, servers, cloud) |
| E | Opportunities and Solutions (gap analysis, work packages) |
| F | Migration Planning (sequence work packages) |
| G | Implementation Governance (oversee delivery) |
| H | Architecture Change Management |
Architecture Content Framework
A standard catalogue of artefacts:
- Catalogs - lists of things (applications, technologies, principles)
- Matrices - relationships (data x application, role x process)
- Diagrams - visual models (value chain, network, sequence)
Worked example - CHED-driven academic e-gov rollout
| Phase | Output |
|---|---|
| A | Vision: online enrolment with SSO |
| B | Baseline: paper enrolment. Target: web |
| C | Data + apps: student, programme, billing; ERP + LMS |
| D | Tech: cloud (Azure SEA) + on-prem backup |
| E | Gap: SSO missing; IdP work package required |
| F | Sequence: SSO -> admissions -> payments |
| G | Governance: monthly review board |
| H | Change: handle new privacy amendments without restart |
TOGAF in your capstone
If your capstone is a system development project, TOGAF Phases A, B, C, D map cleanly to Chapter I (Introduction), Chapter II (Related Systems), and Chapter III (Methodology). The vocabulary translates.
Mentor’s tip: TOGAF is the most common EA method in practice. Eight phases, one cycle, and the Content Framework as the artefact vocabulary. Pair TOGAF (process) with Zachman (checklist) and your EA practice covers both how and what.
